Website design, illustration, custom WordPress development & TREB listing integration for a Toronto Real Estate Brokerage Firm.

Living Realty is an established real estate brokerage headquartered in Markham with growing online needs. Their website was out-dated and was not meeting their client’s or staff needs. Living Realty needed a responsive website that could attract new hires and new clients and direct users to important information in an elegant & user-friendly manner.

Project Goals:

  • A fully responsive website – Establish a modern image to prospective buyers / sellers and new hires. The new website should act as a clarion call that Living Realty is an industry leader that understands the challenges of the modern digital age and embraces new ideas and technology to better serve it’s clients and employees.
  • Increase Conversion Rate – Create the proper aesthetics that establish trust, maintain user attention and interest in order to easily enable users to perform their desired action
  • Website architecture and user experience design – provide an elegant, intuitive and modern user experience that perfectly aligned user goals with the key business objectives. Create a user experience that is optimized across platforms and devices. The new website should compliment the new visual language by creating a people first experience that will manifest Living Realty’s approach to exceptional customer service. Restructure menu navigation so that it is simple to use and easy for users from all levels of sophistication to follow.
  • A contemporary user interface design – the design needed to be elegant and sophisticated without being pretentious and inaccessible. Design a typographic hierarchy that is clearly structured and readable on all platforms.
  • Custom WordPress development –  Enable ease of use for all constituencies. The new website should take full advantage of the flexibility offered by WordPress CMS so that the site can be easily added to over time without costly redesigns to interface and templates.
  • Lead Generation and Online Conversions – The new website had to be conversion optimized and be goal oriented.
  • Integration with Toronto MLS listings – A custom design for real-time property search section which would be fully integrated with the Toronto MLS listings.

The Design Process:

Creative Strategy, research, and discovery

I had three working sessions with the team at Living to determine the user personas for the new site and clearly identify their goals and needs as well as the client’s business goals and objectives.

UX, (User Experience) Design

Once a strategy was in place I started to design the new information architecture and create a fully interactive prototype based on the research.  The working prototype allowed us to test the UX with a sample of users. We used the feedback from those users to refine the prototype and to use this final working wireframes and prototype as a guide and basis for further design and development work. Our final working prototype behaved very similarly to the actual site as far as transitions, link behaviors, interactive feedback were concerned.

User Interface Design, Style Guides & Illustration

We started the design process by exploring various typographic hierarchies and treatment options. By establishing the typographic hierarchy we were effectively establishing the ecosystem of how content was to be presented, ie what a headline, paragraph, bullet points, etc could look like.

At this time we also set out to establish the colour harmonies and hex relationships that could define the new site. In other words, we established the various building blocks of the new visual language from the ground up. With so many smart devices it makes sense to design systems that can adapt to any screen size rather designing individual pages.

Once these building blocks were established we could then arrange them according to the layouts created in the prototypes in UX phase to establish the finished design.

We build our website design foundation with beautiful typography! One of the typographic options.

Once a typographic direction is chosen we then specify the details and pass on this information to the developers to start building out the CSS.

During the UI design, we decided to design custom illustrations to add a more tailored look and also to add warmth and a personal feel to the user experience.

Custom WordPress Website Development

I managed the WordPress development process and ensured that production was smooth and that the right team was in place. We started the web development process as soon as the style guide was approved while we were still working on the page mock-ups. This sped up the development process considerably and allowed us to focus on content creation and the finalizing of the mock-ups.

After the user interface designs and prototypes were approved we proceeded to create interactive front-end code from those designs using custom HTML/CSS & Javascript. At this stage, we will build the aesthetics established in the design stage and translate the approved creative designs into a responsive web format that worked across all modern browsers and devices. Javascript and Jquery were used to create smooth animations and transitions that were fast loading and compatible with smart devices.

Once we had the approval of the page designs we started prepping the files using Sketch app and Invision which are our preferred tools for creating pixel-perfect designs and final interactive filed which match our creative vision perfectly.
